The evolution of mammals has passed through many stages since the first appearance of their synapsid ancestors in the Pennsylvanian sub-period of the late Carboniferous period. By the mid-Triassic, there were many synapsid species that looked like lineage leading to today's mammals split up in the Jurassic; synapsids from this period include Dryolestes, more closely related to. The book is organized into five parts. Part I provides an overview of the main themes covered in the present volume. Part II contains papers on ecological interactions, including variation in group sizes of forest primates, group foraging, and the origin of monogamy in mammals and fishes. Part III examines the ecology of social mammals. Ecological and genetic data are considered that can be used to identify the metapopulation patterns in small mammals. The chapter also discusses whether common features of small mammal dispersal and of the processes responsible for extinction of small mammal local populations result in a distinct mammalian perspective of the metapopulation. Ecological Genetics and Genomics publishes ecological studies of broad interest that provide significant insight into ecological interactions or/ and species diversification. New data in these areas are published as research papers, or methods and resource reports that provide novel information on technologies or tools that will be of interest to a broad readership.
